I had an episode a few years ago where I was attacked by a psychotic passenger. I got a beating, quite simply.

Rikke Tidemann Støre, Chief safety representative for conductors at SJ Norge

Rikke Tidemann Støre, chief safety representative for conductors at SJ Norge, told NRK Norge that working on trains has become more challenging in recent years, with passengers including those struggling with addiction or mental health issues. According to NRK Norge, Støre described being attacked by a psychotic passenger a few years ago, resulting in a neck injury, sick leave, and several treatments. Since 2023, unwanted incidents on trains have increased in line with passenger numbers, rising from just over 10 in 2023 to over 60 in 2025, with the trend continuing this year. Passenger numbers grew from 78.2 million to 84.1 million in the same period.

SJ Norge has implemented measures to address the rise in incidents. Overconductor Frode Barmoen told NRK Norge that the company takes a preventive approach, training staff on handling violence and threats in both basic and ongoing training. According to NRK Norge, Barmoen described a colleague support system that activates immediately after an unwanted incident, and employees who experience incidents undergo a debrief and are offered psychological help. In March, the government announced the start of work on a national working environment strategy. Minister of Labour and Inclusion Kjersti Stenseng took the train between Hommelvik and Åsen to learn about SJ Norge's work.

It's fine today.

These are challenging situations to be in. We see from the reports coming to us that there is a relatively large increase in violence and threats against employees.

We take a preventive approach. We want to be ahead and try to make our personnel aware of how they can handle and present themselves on the train.

Frode Barmoen, Overconductor at SJ Norge

We have established a colleague support system. It is a very good apparatus that kicks in as soon as you experience an unwanted incident.
