Key Points
  • A 16-year-old was stabbed with a ninja sword in a mistaken identity killing in Wolverhampton.
  • The case led to life sentences for two teens and a new law banning ninja swords in the UK.
  • The victim's mother advocates against knife crime and plans to engage parents through schools.

Ronan Kanda was stabbed to death in June 2022 in Wolverhampton. He was 16 years old when he was killed. Ronan Kanda was attacked with a 20-inch ninja sword.

The attack was a case of mistaken identity. Prabjeet Veadhesa and Sukhman Shergill were Ronan Kanda's killers. Prabjeet Veadhesa and Sukhman Shergill were both 17 years old at the time of the killing.

In 2023, both were jailed for life. Prabjeet Veadhesa must serve at least 18 years in prison, while Sukhman Shergill must serve at least 16 years. Prabjeet Veadhesa bought the ninja sword online using his mother's ID and collected it just hours before the killing.

After the killing, Prabjeet Veadhesa and Sukhman Shergill went home, ordered takeaway food, and played video games. Ronan's Law has made it illegal to sell, make, or import ninja swords to the UK. Pooja Kanda, Ronan's mother, received an OBE last month for her anti-knife crime crusade.

She still lives on the street where her son was killed. Pooja Kanda wants to use school parents' evenings to speak directly to parents about knife crime. One of the killers' mothers said to Pooja Kanda during the court case, 'My son hasn't done anything wrong'.

Pooja Kanda believes that one of the killers still doesn't think he's done anything wrong because his mother is backing him up. She says her grief has never gone away and she feels broken beyond words.
