A synagogue in Liège, Belgium was reportedly damaged in an explosion that occurred during the night leading to Monday, according to Swedish media reports. The explosion took place on the street in front of the synagogue, according to police in Liège. The blast caused material damage to the synagogue building and also blew out windows in buildings on the opposite side of the street.
Police are investigating the cause of the explosion in its initial phase. The mayor of Liège has reportedly characterized the incident as a clear antisemitic crime. The area has been cordoned off, and the federal police's terrorism unit has been called in to investigate the matter, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.
