Kanje will leave his current position at the Malmö-based newspaper to take on the role overseeing press ethics and representing individuals who feel they have been wrongly treated by media outlets.

Kanje's last day as editor-in-chief of Sydsvenskan will be September 18, 2026, after which he will begin his new duties as media ombudsman in autumn 2026. He has served as editor-in-chief of Sydsvenskan since May 2020, having previously held the same position at Helsingborgs Dagblad for four years.

In statements reported by the publications, Kanje described the opportunity as "a chance that only comes once in a lifetime." He reflected on his six years at Sydsvenskan, calling them "the best and most exciting years of my professional life."

The media ombudsman position is part of Sweden's media self-regulation system, with the ombudsman appointed by a board representing major media organizations including SVT, SR, TV4, Tidningsutgivarna, and the Swedish Union of Journalists. The role involves ensuring media outlets adhere to ethical guidelines and assisting individuals seeking redress for perceived media mistreatment.

Pia Rehnquist, head of Bonnier News Local which owns Sydsvenskan, described Kanje as a "strong and successful editor-in-chief with great commitment and integrity" and noted that the recruitment process for his successor has begun.
