The Left Party has threatened parties in the rental housing market with new legislation if they do not agree to reform the system in favor of tenants. The party's proposal involves, in the event of an election victory, pushing for an investigation to review the rules for the parties, with rents frozen completely during the investigation. According to the Left Party, private property owners have exploited the negotiation system to charge unreasonably high rents, prompting their call for urgent changes.
The Center Party is relaunching its demand for market rents in new construction, a position that has drawn strong criticism from the Tenants' Association. In 2019, the Center Party entered the January Agreement with the Social Democrats, the Green Party, and the Liberals, with the introduction of market rents as one of its most important issues. In summer 2021, Stefan Löfven's government proceeded with market rents, which meant the death knell for the January Agreement and a subsequent government crisis, highlighting the contentious nature of this policy.
Other parties have also taken positions on rent-setting. The Moderates have a party decision on free rent-setting in new production, with the Christian Democrats and Liberals also having proposals in the same direction. The current government has not moved forward with market rents because the Sweden Democrats are against it, creating a political stalemate on the issue.
Statistics from SCB show that rents have increased sharply from 2023 onwards, after previously having a relatively steady increase, adding urgency to the debate. The Tenants' Association is strongly critical of the Center Party's stance on market rents, arguing it could exacerbate affordability issues for tenants.
In other policy areas, the Social Democrats want to ban religious schools and independent schools, a move that could reshape Sweden's education landscape. The Christian Democrats want to introduce a recommended age limit for when children should get their first smartphone, addressing concerns about digital exposure.
On the issue of teenage deportations, SD leader Jimmie Åkesson says that the so-called teenage deportations should be paused. The opposition demands that teenage deportations be stopped immediately, citing humanitarian concerns. The government is working on a solution to teenage deportations, which involve young people being deported despite their families being allowed to stay, with ongoing discussions aimed at resolving this complex issue.
