Key Points
  • Kronoberg expanded participation in Utrecht emigration fair to attract Dutch residents
  • Growing Dutch interest in Sweden and Kronoberg's promotional efforts
  • Härjedalen and Strömsund's participation and need for residents

Six of eight municipalities in Kronoberg, together with Region Kronoberg and several companies in the county, participated in this year's international emigration fair called Emigration Expo on March 21-22 in the Dutch city of Utrecht. The purpose of the participation was to showcase Kronoberg and show the opportunities available there, with Tingsryd, Markaryd, and Ljungby having participated in previous years and Alvesta, Växjö, and Älmhult also joining this year, making this one of the larger joint efforts to attract residents to Kronoberg. Interest in living in Sweden is increasing among Dutch people, with the number of residents with Dutch origin in Sweden increasing from 125 to 667 between 2004 and 2024.

Härjedalen municipality was in the Netherlands this weekend to try to attract new residents, together with Strömsund, exhibiting at the large emigration fair in Utrecht. Strömsund has visited the fair since 2010, resulting in 126 new municipal residents. Härjedalen municipality, like many other municipalities in Sweden, needs more residents and workforce for both the municipality and the business sector.

Between 150,000 and 200,000 people emigrate from the Netherlands each year. Europe's largest emigration fair is held in Utrecht each year. It remains unclear how many new residents Kronoberg's participation is expected to attract or what specific opportunities are being promoted to Dutch emigrants, and the total number of Swedish participants at the fair has not been disclosed.
