Key Points
  • Simona Mohamsson attended only 2 of 12 municipal council meetings and 3 of 13 social committee meetings while working in Jordan.
  • She participated remotely in most presidium meetings.
  • Mohamsson repaid fees after media inquiries, but the total amount is unknown.

Simona Mohamsson worked at the embassy in Amman, Jordan between October 2022 and October 2023, first as an intern and then in a paid position, according to multiple reports. During her time in Jordan, she retained her political positions in the Gothenburg municipal council and the Hisingen social committee. TV4 Nyheterna investigated Mohamsson's meeting attendance in Gothenburg during this period and revealed she only attended a few meetings. Specifically, she attended two out of twelve municipal council meetings and three out of thirteen social committee meetings, TV4 Nyheterna reported.

Mohamsson participated in a majority of presidium meetings remotely, according to multiple reports. According to the city's regulations, politicians or their parties are responsible for reporting absences or interruptions in their assignments and for pausing the payment of fees. It is unclear whether the arrangement to work remotely from Jordan was formally approved by the relevant authorities.

In an ideal world, I could have traveled back and forth. That was not possible for me. So I tried to do what I could remotely.

According to Göteborgs-Posten, Simona Mohamsson described the situation as not ideal, stating that she tried to do what she could remotely. She stated that the arrangement was cleared with both the social committee and the L group leader in Gothenburg. Mohamsson voluntarily chose to repay the fees she received during her time as a municipal politician, according to her own statement. According to TV4 Nyheterna, the repayment occurred after the media asked questions about her absence. According to Göteborgs-Posten, Mohamsson explained that after the media's questions, she concluded that to avoid any question marks, she would repay the money. It is not known whether she repaid all fees or only a portion, nor what the total amount was.

That said, so that there are no question marks or uncertainties, I have voluntarily chosen to repay the fees I received during that time as a municipal politician.

With the questions you asked, it became obvious that there could be question marks about the assignment and its nature. Then I thought about it and concluded that to avoid any question marks and to be on the safe side, I myself would repay that money.
