The Swedish government has announced an investigation to help the northern municipalities of Kiruna and Gällivare manage the high costs associated with their ongoing city relocations. According to SVT Nyheter, the two mining municipalities have been forced to build numerous new properties to replace old ones as part of mining expansions, leading to significant depreciation costs that burden their financial statements. This situation reportedly contributed to Kiruna municipality reporting a loss of 116 million kronor for 2023, prompting the municipality to raise alarms about the financial pressure.
Civil Minister Erik Slottner (Christian Democrats) stated that the investigation will focus on accounting technical changes to address the issue. Slottner noted that while he cannot preempt the investigator's findings, there may be some unconventional proposals to reduce the sudden and unexpected cost pressure on these municipalities. The investigation aims to propose solutions for what Slottner described as accounting technical changes needed to alleviate the financial strain caused by the mandatory property replacements.
