Swedish Forest Researcher Charged in Climate Protest
Key Points
  • Jeannette Eggers was arrested and charged with damage to property after a climate protest at Bromma Airport
  • She and 16 other activists from Scientist Rebellion face a collective trial in April
  • Eggers has been involved in controversy related to her work on a Church of Sweden forest investigation

Jeannette Eggers was arrested together with 16 other activists from the researcher network Scientist Rebellion, a sister organization to Extinction Rebellion, during the action at Grafair at Bromma Airport. Two of the activists sprayed paint on an airport building and a private jet, leading to charges of damage to property for all 17 individuals. The collective trial will take place on April 7-10.

Eggers, a 48-year-old program manager, has been involved in controversy beyond the protest. She worked on central impact calculations in an investigation about how the Church of Sweden should manage its half a million hectares of forest. Journalist Henrik Sjögren from Fokus contacted her just before the Church Election and later described her as a crime suspect in an article. In an email to Flamman, Sjögren stated that he believed the Church of Sweden's investigator Göran Enander chose an unsuitable person in Eggers, arguing that as an activist advocating for extra-parliamentary actions, her role could contain activist elements.

Media involvement has highlighted previous related cases. Four Extinction Rebellion activists were acquitted the week before for another action at Bromma Airport in 2021. The Solna District Court clarified that a couple of hours of closure and certain flight delays could not be counted as sufficiently serious consequences for a conviction.
