Ebba Busch, the Swedish Energy and Business Minister from the Christian Democrats (KD), recently criticized SVT reporter Kristina Lagerström's questions as politically biased during an interview about electric vehicle sales. MP spokesperson Amanda Lind called this a way to evade responsibility for failed climate policies. Electric vehicle sales in Sweden have stagnated at just under 40%, while Denmark's share is nearly 70% and Norway's is over 90%.
The Swedish government's policies since 2022, including tax cuts on petrol and diesel and reduced biofuel requirements, have stalled the transition away from fossil fuels in transport. Ebba Busch said Jimmie Åkesson does not work as much as she or others do, questioning his suitability as prime minister. A source within the Sweden Democrats described Ebba Busch's comments about Åkesson as disloyal and criticized her for referencing his past sick leave.

There is dissatisfaction within the Sweden Democrats over how little Busch has accomplished during the mandate period. KD is upset about the deal between SD and M, seeing it as a non-issue and unwilling to give away important negotiation capital. The government's decision to halt the introduction of criticized electricity grid fees caused confusion among grid companies, with implementation delayed until January 1, 2027.
Many electricity companies have already introduced a special fee on the electricity bill based on how much electricity is consumed simultaneously. Several large companies, including Vattenfall and Eon, have not introduced the special fee on the electricity bill based on simultaneous consumption. From January 1, 2027, the law requires everyone to charge a power fee.
Ebba Busch said Jimmie Åkesson does not work as much as she or others do, questioning his suitability as prime minister.
The parties in the Tidö agreement have agreed to review the law on power fees. According to Ebba Busch, many households and businesses have contacted her and expressed concerns about the power fee system. Surveys have shown that many people do not understand the power fee system.
How the review of the power fee law will work or which authority will be tasked with it is not yet clear. The purpose of the power charge is to encourage electricity customers to spread their consumption over the day. Spreading electricity consumption reduces pressure on the electricity system and allows more consumers to be connected without expanding the grid unnecessarily.
We will review whether it is possible to make sensible adjustments to this, or whether we should simply stop it outright, and how, in such cases.
The change has been met with criticism from electricity network companies that have already introduced the system, resulting in more expensive electricity bills without clear understanding. Electricity network companies are not allowed to increase the overall fee for the entire customer group, so when some lose out, those who can even out their electricity consumption become winners on the new power tariffs. Different electricity companies have different ways of implementing power tariffs, but essentially the customer partly pays for their occasional power peaks during a month.
In Ellevio's case, the fee consists of a fixed fee, a transmission fee based on kWh usage, a power charge based on the average of the three highest power peaks (accounting for 40% of the total), and a rule that at night (10pm–6am), only half the power peak is counted. The stagnation in electric vehicle sales highlights broader challenges in Sweden's climate transition, with policies since 2022 facing scrutiny for slowing progress compared to neighboring countries. Internal political tensions, including Busch's remarks on Åkesson and dissatisfaction within the Sweden Democrats, complicate efforts to address these issues.
According to Ebba Busch, many households and businesses have contacted her and expressed concerns about the power fee system.
Meanwhile, the power fee system, intended to manage grid demand, has sparked confusion and criticism due to its complex implementation and unclear future review process, affecting both consumers and electricity companies.
It has had completely unreasonable consequences. I have said that we have to clean this up.
It doesn't help electrification in the way that was initially thought.
