Swedes' death sentences commuted to life in Iraq
Key Points
  • A 19-year-old Swede's death sentence in Iraq was commuted to life imprisonment.
  • Two other Swedes also had their death sentences commuted to life terms.
  • Sweden cannot transfer the sentences due to a lack of agreement with Iraq.

A 19-year-old man from Hudiksvall, Sweden, who was sentenced to death in Iraq for the murder of a gang leader in Baghdad in 2024, has had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs announced this. The man, along with two other Swedes, was convicted for involvement in the killing of Mustafa "Benzema" Alijiburi, a former leader of the Foxtrot network, who was shot dead on a busy street in Baghdad in January 2024.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs stated that all convicted Swedes have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. In the summer of 2025, the 19-year-old applied to have his sentence transferred to Sweden, but the Ministry of Justice noted that Sweden has no agreement with Iraq for the transfer of sentences or extradition, making it impossible to carry out.
