Sweden speeds up two major rail expansion projects
Key Points
  • Government confirms four-track expansion between Uppsala and Stockholm, with new stations at Bergsbrunna and Alsike.
  • Hässleholm-Lund expansion accelerated via doubled funding; timeline uncertain but years could be cut.
  • Route alternative under study may bypass Höör and Eslöv, raising local concerns.

The Swedish government has confirmed the expansion of four tracks between Uppsala and Stockholm, as per the 2017 agreement, according to Uppsala kommun officials. New train stations will be built south of Bergsbrunna and in Alsike. At the same time, the government has accelerated the expansion of the Hässleholm-Lund railway by adding more funding, multiple sources report. The government is providing additional money for two new tracks between Hässleholm and Lund, and has doubled the amount proposed by the Swedish Transport Administration for the Lund-Hässleholm line, enabling an earlier start, according to Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD).

No exact timeline has been set for the Hässleholm-Lund expansion, Carlson said, but it could cut several years off the timeframe. The Swedish Transport Administration is investigating route alternatives, and one would leave Höör and Eslöv without stations along the new tracks. Höör's municipal council chair Johan Svahnberg (M) expressed worry about the possibility of Höör and Eslöv losing train stations. "It would be devastating if Höör and Eslöv end up without station locations," Svahnberg said at a press conference. "The train represents the entire development of Höör municipality. We will do everything we can to ensure there are station locations." Despite concerns, Svahnberg welcomed the acceleration: "It is very gratifying that they want to speed up the expansion."

In addition, the government is advancing the construction of additional platform tracks at Malmö Central Station, according to multiple reports. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) announced at a press conference that a negotiating person will be appointed to analyze cost-effective infrastructure measures in the Öresund region, including using surplus from the Öresund Bridge. "That person will review how the surplus from the Öresund Bridge can strengthen infrastructure here in the Öresund region," Kristersson said.

The government's approved national plan is expected to be presented in full soon. Several details remain unclear, including the specific amount of additional funding for the Hässleholm-Lund project and the exact new timeline. It also remains to be seen which route alternative will be chosen for the Hässleholm-Lund line and whether Höör and Eslöv will retain stations. The timetable for the national plan's release has not been confirmed.
