Sweden launches digital marriage impediment service
Key Points
  • Both parties must be registered residents in Sweden to use the digital service.
  • The impediment examination is free and processed immediately if no impediments exist.
  • Couples can apply for a surname change simultaneously with the examination.

To use the digital service, both individuals getting married must be registered as residents in Sweden, according to Skatteverket. If either party is not registered as a resident, special rules apply. The impediment examination is free of charge.

For the examination to be approved, first one party must log in with their e-identification, then the other. If no impediments exist, the examination will be processed immediately. After approval, the couple receives both the certificate of impediment examination and a marriage certificate form via their digital mailbox.

It is both quick and easy to do the impediment examination via our new e-service.

Those who wish to change their surname in connection with the wedding can apply for this at the same time as the impediment examination. Skatteverket handles the name change when registering the marriage.

While doing the impediment examination, you can also take the opportunity to apply for a new surname digitally.
