Sweden hit by multiple water outages and leaks
Key Points
  • Major water outages in Herrljunga and Upplands-Bro, with repairs ongoing.
  • Multiple other incidents including leaks in Malmö, Luleå, and Sköllersta, and flooding in Ullatti.
  • Broader water shortage warnings and infrastructure challenges across Sweden.

In Herrljunga, a suspected water leak has been identified, but it is unclear if it is the only leak, according to multiple reports. The prognosis for when water will be restored was unclear on Sunday morning. The municipality's crisis management was activated at 06:30 on Sunday, and social services have crisis routines in place, with the rescue service assisting by providing drinking water tanks.

Water can be collected at Altorps waterworks. By Sunday evening, water pressure had returned to normal in most of the town, but three smaller areas—Östergården-Åkergränd, Stora Götgatan, and Gärdesgatan (Folkets park, Skoghälla)—were still without water. Water tanks remain at Östergården's inner courtyard, Ugglan preschool, and Altorps water post.

Then we deployed resources immediately. Then it turned out to be quite complicated to find the root cause, so we activated more resources and have been working all Saturday and through the night to Sunday.

According to Alingsås Tidning, Anders Mannikoff, CEO of Herrljunga Elektriska, described the situation as complicated, noting that the leaks may be due to ground movements after winter and pressure changes in the pipe network. Repairs continue on Monday, with an update expected in the afternoon. Drinking water quality is being checked regularly, and no municipal operations are assessed to be affected on Monday.

Other water-related incidents have been reported across the country. In Mariefred, Sevab issued a service message about a water leak south of the town, but it was incorrect; it was a planned shutdown, according to Eskilstuna-Kuriren. Water was shut off at several addresses around Hedlandet at around 10:00 due to planned work to commission a new pipe, expected to be completed by 16:00.

One must be humble about the fact that it is a large and widespread system. One cannot rule out that there are leaks in more than one place. You have to proceed very systematically.

In Malmö, an acute leak in one of the city's largest sewage pipes has led VA Syd to urge everyone to avoid contact with the water in central Malmö. Residents are urged to save water by flushing the toilet less often, avoiding washing machines and dishwashers, and showering briefly or not at all. In Luleå, a water leak affects buildings A, B, C, and D in the Kallkällan housing cooperative, managed by HSB Norr.

According to Kuriren, Christine Aspgren of HSB Norr described the leak as being at approximately the same location as one last winter. In Sköllersta, some residents are completely without water, and it is unclear when the leak can be repaired, according to Smålandsposten. Flooding is also occurring in Ullatti, where ice jams during ice breakup in Ängesån are threatening properties.

The municipality's crisis management was activated this morning at 06:30 to collaborate with us. Social services have their crisis routines to handle such situations and the rescue service assists with drinking water tanks. There is a ready plan for where to place water tanks.

A property owner reported that their house is threatened, but the rescue service decided not to respond and is waiting. In Gällivare, resident Hans Åhl in Skröven must travel about one kilometer to fetch water when supply is cut off, according to Norrländska Socialdemokraten. The municipality discovered low levels in the water treatment plant last Sunday and confirmed one or more leaks.

In Arvika, there is no hot water for district heating customers due to a disturbance at the district heating plant, affecting all customers. The prognosis for restoration is around 9 o'clock. Broader water shortage warnings are emerging across Sweden.

Already now you can fetch water at Altorps waterworks. So if you have a canister, you can go there and draw water. Then we will update with more information on our website continuously, probably several times during the day.

Authorities warn of water shortage in Skåne, and fountains are being turned off. The municipality will search for leaks, according to Östersunds-Posten.

I'm not exactly singing when I fetch water.

Hans Åhl, Resident in Skröven

What we know is that it is a water leak at approximately the same place as when the area was affected last winter.
