Key Points
  • SD is secretly vetting candidates for government roles, with Linda Lindberg leading preparations.
  • The Moderates plan to give SD the migration minister post if they retain power.
  • SD has seen electoral gains since 2006 but lost ground in the 2024 EU elections.

According to seven major media sources, the Sweden Democrats (SD) are preparing a 'boarding team' for Rosenbad, the government headquarters, and secretly vetting candidates for potential ministerial roles. The party gathered about 90 people at Scandic Downtown Camper in Stockholm for an inspiration day with a hidden agenda to prepare for government roles, the sources said. The vetting process includes assessments of work ethic, social media behavior, media handling, and ability to cooperate. Linda Lindberg is responsible for the preparations and is considered a possible minister, while Jimmie Åkesson and Henrik Vinge are considered obvious ministerial candidates, according to the same sources. TV4 Nyheterna, via Sveriges Radio, and Dagens Nyheter report that the Moderates will let SD into government after the election and give them the migration minister post. Ulf Kristersson announced that the Moderates want to form a government with SD, with Kristersson as prime minister and SD having major policy influence and important ministerial posts. Political scientist Jenny Madestam said SD can demand heavy ministerial roles if the Tidö parties retain power. SD is the smallest party but with influence, the sources noted.

Sweden's ruling coalition—comprising the Moderates, Liberals, and Christian Democrats—supported by the Sweden Democrats is likely the most far-right leaning in the country's history, according to six research sources. The Sweden Democrats are a radical right-wing populist party with hardline, illiberal stances on crime and immigration from Muslim-majority countries. The party has fascist roots but has sought to become a more conventional right-wing populist party, the research indicates. No party had made overtures to or indicated a willingness to cooperate with the Sweden Democrats as of 2018, but that has changed with the current coalition arrangement.

SD used the slogan 'My Europe Builds Walls: Against Immigration, Against Criminal Gangs, Against Islamists' on EU campaign posters.

Sweden Democrats, Political party

The Sweden Democrats have enjoyed significant electoral success since first entering parliament in 2010 and are currently the second-largest party in parliament, according to research. Support for the party has increased in every election since 2006. However, in the 2024 European Parliament elections, SD placed fourth, winning three of Sweden's 21 seats, and lost electoral ground for the first time. The Green Party fared better than SD in those elections, indicating climate action may have been more important than curbing immigration for EU voters in Sweden, some commentators said. More first-time voters voted for SD in 2024 than in 2019, the research shows. As of May 2025, Statistics Sweden (SCB) data indicated the Social Democrats at 36.2%, the Moderates at 18.3%, and the Sweden Democrats at 18.0%. October 2025 surveys from Novus show the Social Democrats around 34.6%. Aggregated trends suggest the left bloc could secure a parliamentary majority if elections were held today, according to research.

The Tidö Agreement is a political cooperation agreement between the three coalition parties and SD, establishing the current cabinet with Kristersson as prime minister, according to two research sources. Many regressive proposals in the agreement are unlikely to be implemented as they conflict with EU law, the European Convention on Human Rights, or Sweden's constitution, six research sources said. The minimum sentence for serious weapons offences was doubled in reaction to increased gun violence and gang activity. The government says it has handled roughly two thirds of the points in the Tidö Agreement. The agreement includes directives for healthcare, such as a strengthened care guarantee, clarifying the doctor's role, developing rural healthcare, and education initiatives for equal care, according to two research sources. A special investigator has been tasked to propose a new, strengthened care guarantee, with a final report due May 25, 2026. The National Board of Health and Welfare has mapped prescriptions of drugs not within the framework of care provided by caregivers. 300 million SEK in state grants have been directed to municipalities and regions to strengthen healthcare in rural areas. The government is investing about 1.5 billion SEK through the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) for 2025 to strengthen maternal health and equal care.

After the 2018 election, the Social Democrats' share of the vote fell from 31% in 2014 to 28.3% in 2018, according to research. The Social Democrats are the largest party by a considerable margin and lead the largest block. The Red/Green coalition has comprised the largest block in parliament and is larger than the Alliance. Towards the end of 2015, Sweden adapted to more restrictive immigration policies, with several parties changing from liberal to restrictive standpoints.
