Sweden delegates bear hunting decisions to counties
Key Points
  • Swedish EPA delegates bear hunting decisions to county boards for three years.
  • Dalarna county board is among those included.
  • Multi-year delegation aims for continuity and predictability.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has again given the county administrative boards in the northern and central large carnivore management areas the right to decide on licensed bear hunting, according to multiple reports. One of the county administrative boards covered is the one in Dalarna. New for this year is that the agency delegates decision-making authority for three years, said Hanna Ek, unit manager at the agency's Wildlife Management Unit.

She noted that bear populations have been stable over time, and that multi-year delegations contribute to continuity and better predictability in management. The specific quotas and conditions for the hunting remain unknown, as does the exact bear population size in the affected areas.
