Sweden's largest freestyle club sees surge in mogul skiing interest

Key Points
  • National mogul skier count rose from around 200 to over 300 since 2020.
  • Värmdö Freestyle Club has doubled its skiers in five to six years and is now Sweden's largest.
  • Increased interest is linked to Walter Wallberg's Olympic win and the sport's varied nature.

Interest in mogul skiing is greater than ever in Sweden, with the number of mogul skiers nationally increasing from around 200 to over 300 since 2020. In Värmdö Freestyle Club, the skiers have doubled in the past five to six years. The club is now Sweden's largest and has difficulty accepting more skiers.

Twelve-year-old Lisa Holmberg believes the interest is due to Walter Wallberg winning the Olympics in 2022. The club's trainer John Brander also thinks Swedish mogul skiing stars like Walter Wallberg have played a big role in the increased interest, but points to other factors, saying it is a very varied sport with many elements. The club trains in Saltisbacken in Saltsjöbaden and hopes Saltsjöbadens Slalomklubb will start its own mogul skiing activity.
