Sweden will begin dialogue with France about participating in strengthening Europe's nuclear deterrence, according to reports from Swedish public broadcasters. The Sweden Democrats (SD) are reportedly open to French nuclear weapons being placed on Swedish soil, though specific details about the party's position remain limited.

A survey conducted by SVT shows that five of eight parties in the Swedish parliament want Sweden to contribute to nuclear deterrence in Europe. Half of the parliamentary parties also open for nuclear weapons to be placed in Sweden in the event of war.

The Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats, Liberals, and Centre Party are positive about Sweden being involved in building up European nuclear deterrence, including through joint NATO exercises and deepened dialogue and cooperation with Britain and France.

The Green Party and Left Party are clear opponents, while the Social Democrats respond that they do not want to see more nuclear weapons. Parliament has agreed that nuclear weapons should not be placed in Sweden in peacetime, but half of parliamentary parties open to the possibility during wartime.

The recent increased uncertainty about the United States' commitment to European security has given new life to discussions about a European nuclear capability that is not dependent on the US.
