Key Points
  • Sverigedemokraterna has seen eight of its 16 regional council members resign in Stockholm since the 2022 election, the highest among all parties.
  • A total of 29 out of 149 regional council members in Stockholm have left their positions during the current mandate period.
  • The party's group leader claims three of the eight departures were due to members becoming parliamentarians after the 2022 election.

Nearly one in five regional council members in Stockholm has left their position during the current mandate period, with Sverigedemokraterna experiencing the highest number of departures, according to a report from SVT Stockholm. Since the 2022 election, 29 of Stockholm's 149 regional council members have resigned from their positions. Sverigedemokraterna has seen eight of its 16 members leave their positions, while both Socialdemokraterna and Moderaterna have each lost six members from the regional council since the election.

Two of Sverigedemokraterna's politicians reportedly left following scandals. On a national level, Sverigedemokraterna is also the party with the most resignations from regional councils during this mandate period, according to statistics from Statistics Sweden (SCB). Msciwoj Swigon, Sverigedemokraterna's group leader for the regional council in Stockholm, stated in an email response that the high number of departures gives a misleading picture, noting that three of the eight individuals became members of parliament after the 2022 election and therefore could not remain in the regional council.

Political scientist Jenny Madestam commented that frequent turnover among politicians likely doesn't affect voters, noting that regional councils are a political level that is often overlooked despite making decisions on important societal matters. The regional council decides on budgets and overarching goals for Region Stockholm, with healthcare being its largest area of responsibility, along with public transport, culture, and regional development.
