  • Aims to lower barriers and prevent long-term sick leave.
  • Enables two separate two-week trial periods within a year.

A new law allowing work trials with maintained sick pay for those on sick leave has come into effect in Sweden. The reform, proposed by the government, aims to lower barriers for returning to work and prevent long-term sick leave. It enables individuals on sick leave, in agreement with their employer, to test working for shorter periods without performance requirements while keeping their sick pay.

The law took effect on March 1. According to the government, this creates safer pathways back to work and strengthens both individuals and society. Work trials can be conducted during two separate two-week periods within 365 days, allowing time for individuals and employers to find suitable ways forward without immediate full functionality.
