The Swedish nuclear technology company Blykalla is reportedly planning to apply for permits in 2026 to build six small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in Norrsundet, Gävle. According to SVT Gävleborg, the company aims to start production within ten years and promises up to 400 jobs from the project.

Local residents in Norrsundet have expressed mixed opinions about the proposed nuclear power plant. Erica Lönn, who was born and raised in the area, stated: "Much rather than wind power anyway." Viktor Påhlman expressed uncertainty, saying: "I'm a bit torn, industry may absolutely be needed but whether nuclear power specifically is right, I can't answer that." Erik Eklund was more direct in his concerns: "Nuclear power yes! But not right nearby, we don't want Chernobyl here."

The proposal comes as Sweden sees increased interest in nuclear energy development, with several municipalities considering similar projects across the country. Blykalla's planned application would mark a significant step in Sweden's nuclear energy expansion efforts.

I'm a bit torn, industry may absolutely be needed but whether nuclear power specifically is right, I can't answer that.
