Swedish government grants limited wind power funds to municipalities

Key Points
  • Swedish government provides three-year wind power funds to municipalities, ending after 2027.
  • Ånge municipality in Västernorrland receives 30 million kronor, with Västernorrland leading in wind power construction.
  • Officials express skepticism about the short-term support encouraging new wind power investments.

The Swedish government has started distributing promised funds to municipalities where wind power has been built, but the support is limited to three years and will stop after 2027. Västernorrland is the county in Sweden that has built the most wind power, with Ånge municipality at the top, followed by Sollefteå and Örnsköldsvik. Ånge will receive a total of 30 million kronor in March and April from the government's pot for 2025 and 2026, with another payment in 2027.

Mathias Sundin, the community development chief in Ånge, said it is a positive addition but short-term, and expressed surprise at the three-year solution, noting that neighboring countries have other approaches like property tax. He is skeptical that this support will encourage municipalities to build more wind power, citing a need for long-term rules. The wind power market in Sweden has shifted from very hot to very cold in recent years, with 2025 described as the worst year ever for new investments in wind power by the industry organization Green Power.
