Researchers in Uppsala, Sweden, have solved a long-standing mystery by identifying the genetic mutation causing dwarfism in Dalmatians. The breakthrough came after a dog breeder inquired about blood samples taken from dogs she bred over 30 years ago. Scientists located the samples deep in a freezer and, using modern technology, analyzed them along with additional tests and X-rays.
The condition, where legs don't grow properly, remains rare but still occurs in Europe today.
