Swedish train punctuality drops in January due to snowstorms

Key Points
  • Train punctuality in Sweden dropped to 85% in January from December's high.
  • Trafikverket attributes the decline to snowstorms affecting infrastructure and trains.
  • 94% of trains arrived within 15 minutes of schedule, with cancellations not counted.

In January, the punctuality of passenger trains in Sweden reportedly worsened significantly compared to December. According to Trafikverket, difficult weather was behind the decline. Thomas Andersson, a department head, stated in a press release that the main cause of increased delays for travelers was several snowstorms that affected both infrastructure and trains.

During the month, 85 percent of the over 91,000 commuter, regional, and long-distance trains arrived on time, defined as a maximum of five minutes behind schedule. 8 percentage points lower than in January 2025. At the same time, 94 percent of passenger trains arrived a maximum of 15 minutes behind schedule in January this year, according to Trafikverket.
