Swedish police have been sent to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to support Swedes in the region. The police were dispatched on Thursday following a request from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. According to reports, the purpose is to establish an evacuation plan for around 200 Swedes with special needs, such as families with small children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
The police reportedly aim to help those affected by unrest in the Middle East. The police chief stated they will remain as long as needed, but when airspace opens, Swedes should travel to Sweden independently as much as possible. The police have previous experience with such missions, including evacuations from Gaza in November 2023.
