Key Points
  • Residence bans are being implemented in Västmanland with enforcement planned soon.
  • Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer emphasizes their importance for crime prevention.
  • Secrecy issues in crime prevention work were discussed, with obstacles remaining regarding healthcare.

A meeting between local police and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer raised the question of residence bans, a legal change that means a person can be banned from being in a specific place. According to officials, residence bans have been used in a couple of cases in Västmanland, and more are on the way. Local police district chief Lars Jansson says some residence bans will be enforced quite soon.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer says residence bans have started to be used in Västerås and have had a major effect in Sweden overall. He believes residence bans are incredibly important as a preventive tool for reducing personal robberies, removing open drug scenes, and creating security for local shop owners. Secrecy in crime prevention work was also discussed at the meeting, where last year secrecy was eased between schools, social services, and police, according to officials.

However, police in Västerås say there are still obstacles regarding secrecy requirements towards healthcare.
