Suspicious incidents at Høvåg dock lead to boat thefts and police probe
Key Points
  • Suspicious incidents at Høvåg dock in March led to police involvement and boat thefts.
  • Stolen boats were found in a hidden bay with motors removed, indicating targeted thefts.
  • Harbor security gaps include no cameras, gates, or year-round security watch.

According to NRK Sørlandet, Dagfinn Berg described a motion-activated camera at the dock being triggered by a suspicious person who boarded a friend's boat and inspected it before disappearing. The next day, Berg and his friend secured the boats with more locks, but that night at 2:30 AM, another person carrying a long oar looked directly at the camera, realized he was detected, hid his face, and left. Berg and his friend then found two suspicious cars parked on a gravel lot, and when police investigated, they found a person inside one car, took the registration number, and banished the man.

The day after, it was discovered that two boat motors had been unscrewed from two other boats. Jan David Svendsen from Grimstad had his entire boat stolen from the harbor, with four mooring lines cut and the mooring rope missing. After several hours of searching, the boat was found in a hidden bay, moored together with two other boats, and the motors had been removed from all three.

A person had triggered the motion-activated camera at the dock.

According to NRK Sørlandet, Jan David Svendsen described that the thieves did not touch the chart plotter or fuel tank on his boat. Svendsen believes the thieves lifted the motors at the harbor and used oars to paddle the boats silently into the bay, and he noted that a 50-horsepower motor weighs over 100 kilograms, suggesting the thieves were likely multiple and well-organized. According to NRK Sørlandet, Jan David Svendsen described that a few years ago, the Homborsund boat association and its members voted against introducing cameras, and there is no gate or floodlighting with sensors, while security watch in the harbor only applies from June 1 to August.

Herman Gunnufsen, chairman of Homborsund Boat Association, understands it is unpleasant that boats are stolen from the harbor. According to NRK Sørlandet, Herman Gunnufsen described that the question is who is willing to pay for security watch year-round, and measures must be within reasonable limits, and he encourages boat owners to implement measures such as installing transmitters on boats. The police expect a sharp increase in boat and motor thefts now that the boating season has started.

The day after we immediately secured the boats better with more locks.

It comes another guy carrying a long oar. He looks right at the camera and realizes he is discovered. Then he hides his face, and leaves.

When the police investigate the cars, there is a person lying inside one of the cars.

The whole boat was gone. Four mooring lines were cut, and the mooring rope was missing. Then I thought that it is stolen.

It was the motor they wanted. It was very targeted. The chart plotter and the fuel tank they had not touched.

A 50-horsepower motor weighs over 100 kilos. They must have been several and well organized.

For a couple of years ago, the boat association and the members voted no to introducing cameras. There is neither gate nor floodlighting with sensor.

The security watch in the harbor only applies from June 1 and out August.

That is not everyone who puts out the boat in that period. Then we are a risk group.

At the same time, the question is who is willing to pay for security watch year-round. We must look at what we can do, but it must be within reason's limits.
