A man in his 40s from Sundsvall, Sweden, has been charged with child pornography offenses after being identified through a report from the social media platform Snapchat to US authorities, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT. The case began when Snapchat representatives detected illegal downloads and sharing of child pornography material and reported the account to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), a US agency established by Congress in 1984. NCMEC was able to connect the account to a user in Sweden, and through the account's username which contained both email address and phone number, Swedish police tracked down the Sundsvall resident.

Ann Strömberg, group manager for ISÖB (internet-related sexual abuse against children) within the police's northern region based in Sundsvall, stated that platforms on the internet are required to report illegal material downloads to NCMEC.
