A Spanish research group has found that dermcidin, a peptide naturally present in sweat, saliva, and tears, may explain why some people never get influenza. The study analyzed samples from 19 healthcare workers who reported never having had influenza, revealing high concentrations of dermcidin. Laboratory studies also indicated that dermcidin could inhibit common influenza viruses.
Previously known to protect against certain bacteria, this peptide might play a crucial role in how individuals resist influenza infection.
