Key Points
  • The Liberal Party's Stockholm district will not nominate any challenger to party leader Simona Mohamsson ahead of Sunday's confidence vote.
  • Economic policy spokesperson Cecilia Rönn has been nominated by the Jönköping district as a potential challenger to Mohamsson.
  • Stockholm Liberals cite the one-week timeline as insufficient for serious consideration of a party leadership position.

The Liberal Party's Stockholm district has decided not to nominate any challenger to current party leader Simona Mohamsson ahead of a crucial confidence vote this Sunday. The decision comes as the party prepares for an extraordinary national meeting where members will vote on whether to maintain confidence in Mohamsson's leadership.

Jan Jönsson, chairman of the Liberals in Stockholm, stated that the district will not put forward any candidate to challenge Mohamsson. "There is no seriousness in considering a party leadership position in one week. It's an important assignment for Sweden, and you can't have just one week to prepare," Jönsson told journalists ahead of the Stockholm Liberals' annual meeting on Thursday.

Ylva Mozis, chair of the Liberals in Stockholm, echoed this position, saying the short timeline "makes a nomination impossible." The Stockholm district is the party's largest regional association.

Despite Stockholm's decision, economic policy spokesperson Cecilia Rönn has already been nominated for the party leadership by the Liberals in Jönköping. The Sunday meeting will effectively serve as a vote on the party board's decision to reverse its position on cooperating with the Sweden Democrats in a potential future government.

Jönsson, who has previously announced he will leave the party board, stated he will leave politics "sometime this summer" and expressed hope that the Liberals will remain in parliament, though he does not support the current political direction.
