Region Stockholm has announced it needs to increase investment budgets to complete public transportation facilities at the Slussen hub in central Stockholm. According to the regional government, subway entrance investments have increased by 120 million kronor and now total 441 million kronor. The 'Krysset' entrance was completed in 2025 after a challenging construction period that exceeded initial cost estimates due to discrepancies between documentation and actual site conditions, including more asbestos than anticipated requiring nighttime remediation work.
The Saltsjöbanan station at Slussen also requires a significant budget increase, with costs now estimated at 1,110 million kronor - an increase of 419 million kronor compared to previous decisions. The cost overruns are attributed to worse-than-expected ground conditions that required changes to foundation work methods. Region Stockholm and Stockholm City have developed a supplementary agreement to clarify responsibility distribution for integrated construction elements.
The next major component is the Northern Entrance, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, which will connect the subway with Saltsjöbanan's terminal station and future commercial facilities. When completed, Slussen will feature a modern interchange connecting subway, Saltsjöbanan, and bus traffic with improved passenger flows and higher safety standards.
