The Patient Safety Day 2026 was held in Stockholm, organized by Region Stockholm. Approximately 1,000 employees from healthcare and dental care participated. More than 100 improvement works to increase patient safety were presented during the day.
Three of them were awarded Patient Safety Prizes. Södertälje Hospital received the gold prize for the improvement work 'Teamwork, clear goals and courage – Södertälje emergency department's path to shorter waiting times'. The work aimed to increase patient safety through improved lead times and fewer patients left in the emergency department waiting for inpatient care.
After mapping in close collaboration with patients, several new routines and working methods were introduced, including increased nursing staffing, better schedule structure, strengthened teamwork, and all professional categories represented in the management group. SOS Alarm Sweden received the silver prize for the improvement work 'Frequent callers – from reactive to proactive care through person-centered handling'. This project aimed to create structured management for frequent care-seeking persons, so-called frequent callers, who often contact emergency services.
The goal was to investigate the possibility of individual care plans for these persons. Care plans were developed and tested, showing health economic benefits, improved work environment, and a more sustainable care chain. Capio S:t Görans Hospital was voted the audience prize winner by participants at the Patient Safety Day for the improvement work 'Team training between IMA and ICU' to increase patient safety.
