Key Points
  • Excavated masses from SSAB are stored in Boden by a company with a hazardous waste permit.
  • Boden Municipality has reviewed samples and, along with NG Nordic, says the masses pose no risk.
  • Residents express concern, and illnesses at the SSAB construction site in Luleå have been reported.

According to multiple reports, excavated masses from SSAB are currently being stored in Boden. A company in Boden with a permit to handle hazardous waste is storing the masses, and Boden Municipality, as the supervisory authority, has reviewed samples taken from the masses and information about their content. The company NG Nordic and Boden Municipality state that the masses pose no risk.

However, Boden residents Mats Eriksson and Jonny Nilsson are concerned. According to Piteå-Tidningen, Mats Eriksson described wanting a discussion about what happens to the waste from SSAB, noting that people are getting sick. The excavated masses come from a different part of the SSAB area than where people have fallen ill, according to Boden Municipality.

I am trying to highlight this because I want a discussion about what happens to the waste from SSAB, people are getting sick.

There have been several cases of illness at SSAB's new steel plant construction in Luleå. The specific contaminants in the excavated masses and the exact cause of the illnesses remain unknown, as does the final disposal plan for the masses.
