Spirit Airlines shuts down after rescue talks collapse
Key Points
  • Spirit Airlines ceased operations after failed rescue talks with Trump administration
  • Captain Jon Jackson's retirement flight was canceled; Southwest Airlines honored him
  • 17,000 employees affected; refunds offered but no travel assistance

Major media outlets reported that Captain Jon Jackson's retirement flight was canceled due to the shutdown. Jackson instead traveled as a passenger on Southwest Airlines with his son Chris, a first officer for Southwest. Southwest crew organized a celebration for Jackson, including a water cannon salute from Baltimore Airport Fire & Rescue, and staff greeted him with champagne. According to Southwest Airlines, a pilot who overheard Chris mention the retirement flight "seized the opportunity to change the course of the day." Jackson gave a speech thanking everyone upon landing, and Southwest described the gesture as "a powerful reminder of the aviation community's ability to show respect, compassion and solidarity."

Spirit employed approximately 17,000 people, whose fate remains uncertain. The airline had sought a $500 million rescue deal, but the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that it failed because Spirit could not secure backing from bondholders and government stakeholders. Spirit's website announced that all flights are canceled and customer service is discontinued. Customers will receive refunds but no assistance with alternative travel, while some competitors offered capped ticket prices for affected passengers. Spirit stated, "We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come."

This is very overwhelming. I can't thank you all enough.
