An 18-year-old man from Södertälje has been fined for failing to attend military conscription. He was called to a conscription assessment at the Plikt- och prövningsverket in Stockholm in August 2025 but did not appear, despite confirming the summons with Bank-ID the day before. In court, the man denied the offense, claiming he thought he was confirming a cancellation rather than the summons and that he missed SMS and email notifications because his phone was on "do not disturb" mode.

The Södertälje District Court did not find his explanation credible and sentenced him to a fine of 2,000 kronor. According to the Plikt- och prövningsverket, conscription materials were sent to over 100,000 youths born in 2007, with about 28,000 called for assessment. Failure to attend conscription or refuse military service can result in fines or imprisonment; between 2017 and 2024, at least 415 prosecutions were initiated for offenses against the total defense duty, with 41 people sentenced to prison, according to the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society.
