Söderenergi pauses carbon capture project at Igelstaverket

Key Points
  • Söderenergi pauses a carbon capture project at its Igelstaverket plant in Södertälje.
  • The project aimed to capture and store half a million tons of carbon dioxide.
  • The pause is reportedly due to insufficient state support and slow private market interest.

Energy company Söderenergi has paused a carbon capture and storage project at its Igelstaverket combined heat and power plant outside Södertälje, according to reports from Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet. The project aimed to capture and store half a million tons of carbon dioxide. According to Söderenergi's CEO Robert Tingvall, the company reportedly did not receive as much state investment support as hoped, including a denied application for a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency.

Tingvall also reportedly stated that the state has reduced its ambitions to purchase negative emissions, and the private market development has not met expectations, with customers taking too long to sign contracts, leading to a lack of guaranteed revenue to continue the work.
