STOCKHOLM - On the 40th anniversary of former Prime Minister Olof Palme's assassination, all living leaders of Sweden's Social Democratic Party gathered at his gravesite for a memorial ceremony. According to reports, the wreath-laying ceremony took place at Adolf Fredrik cemetery in Stockholm, just a few hundred meters from where Palme was shot and killed on February 28, 1986.
The gathering reportedly included every living former party leader who succeeded Palme: Ingvar Carlsson, Göran Persson, Mona Sahlin, Håkan Juholt, Stefan Löfven, and current leader Magdalena Andersson. Other senior party officials, including party secretary Tobias Baudin and Anders Ygeman, were also in attendance.
The ceremony is traditionally held on the anniversary of Palme's death. Palme, who served as Prime Minister from 1969 to 1976 and again from 1982 until his death, was assassinated while walking home from a cinema with his wife Lisbeth, who is now buried alongside him at the same cemetery since her death in 2018.
The event marks four decades since one of Sweden's most significant political tragedies, which remains unsolved despite numerous investigations over the years.
