Key Points
  • The Social Democrats are proposing to pause new electricity tariffs that charge households based on when they use power.
  • Energy policy spokesperson Fredrik Olovsson criticized the system, saying 'the whole system must be reviewed' and households shouldn't be regulated in such detail.
  • The party also demands a halt to plans for an export cable to Denmark amid concerns about EU proposals redirecting Swedish fees.

The Social Democrats have submitted a committee initiative calling for a pause on new electricity tariffs, according to media reports. The party's energy policy spokesperson Fredrik Olovsson stated at a press conference that 'the whole system must be reviewed' and criticized the detailed regulation of household electricity usage.

The proposed tariffs, known as 'effect tariffs,' would charge households based on when and how they use electricity, with higher costs during peak consumption periods. All electricity grid companies must implement these tariffs by January 1, 2027, according to the reports.

In addition to pausing the tariffs, the Social Democrats reportedly also demand that plans for an export cable to Denmark be halted. This demand comes in response to an EU proposal that would direct Swedish bottleneck fees to common EU projects.

Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch (KD) has previously stated that the new tariffs could be stopped because they have 'unreasonable consequences,' according to the reports. The Social Democrats' initiative is being submitted to the industry committee.
