Key Points
  • Social Minister Jakob Forssmed visited a school in Sundsvall to promote a youth activity card.
  • The card provides funding for children to access sports and cultural activities, with 172 associations linked in Västernorrland.
  • Criticism has been raised over spending on administration, but the minister says costs have been reduced and benefits expanded.

Social Minister Jakob Forssmed visited S:t Olofsskolan in Sundsvall to see how sports clubs connected to the fritidskortet (leisure activity card) are working to reach young people. The card, which has been available for six months, aims to increase access to sports, culture, outdoor activities, and other association activities. In Västernorrland, 172 associations are linked to the card.

Children aged 7 to 16 receive 550 kronor per year, and children in households that received housing allowance last year can get 2,500 kronor per year. Forssmed said the government would like to include more age groups so older youth get the same chance. Criticism has been directed at the millions spent on IT systems and administration instead of lowering association fees directly.
