Social Democrats Propose Säpo Authority to Close Preschools with Extremist Ties

Key Points
  • The Social Democratic Party wants Säpo and the School Inspectorate to have authority to close preschools with extremist connections.
  • Party spokesperson Lawen Redar says there's insufficient knowledge about how widespread the problem of religious preschools with extremist ties is.
  • The proposal includes creating a task force and establishing a national register of religious preschools.

The Swedish Social Democratic Party has proposed granting the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) and the School Inspectorate authority to investigate and potentially close preschools with connections to extremism. According to the party's integration policy spokesperson Lawen Redar, there is currently insufficient knowledge about the extent of religious preschools with extremist links in Sweden. 'We don't know how many children are in these environments,' Redar stated.

The proposal calls for the government to task the School Inspectorate with examining religious influence in preschools. Additionally, the party wants Säpo and the School Inspectorate to form a task force against religious influence and extremism that would have the power to shut down preschools if necessary. The Social Democrats also advocate for establishing a national register of religious preschools to improve oversight and monitoring.
