SMHI Issues Yellow Warning for Sudden Ice Slipperiness in Central Sweden

WeatherWeather
Key Points
  • SMHI has issued a yellow warning for sudden ice slipperiness in central and northern Sweden.
  • The warning is due to snow turning to rain that freezes on cold surfaces, creating hazardous conditions.
  • The warning applies from Wednesday evening through Thursday, with northern areas affected until Thursday evening.

According to SMHI, the yellow warning applies from around 7 PM on Wednesday evening until Thursday morning. In the northern parts, the warning applies until Thursday evening. The warning covers large parts of Svealand, including Sörmland, Stockholm, parts of Uppsala, Örebro, Västmanland, Dalarna, and Värmland, as well as the entire Gävleborg county.

On Wednesday evening, SMHI expanded its warning to also include southern Norrland. The cause is that snow during Wednesday evening is expected to turn into rain that freezes on cold surfaces, resulting in ice slipperiness. Rain on cold road surfaces risks causing problems in traffic.

It is not yet known what specific traffic disruptions or incidents have occurred due to the ice slipperiness. Authorities have not provided details on any road closures, accidents, or travel advisories in effect. The severity of the ice slipperiness and its potential impacts remain unclear.
