The synopsis reveals that a car is pulled from the water with the decomposed skeletal remains of an unknown male in the boot. The vehicle's owner is a respected local GP who left the Isles under a cloud of troubled rumours nine years ago. The investigation takes Calder and Tosh to dark and dangerous places in their quest for the truth.

The 11th series will shoot across various locations in Scotland and the Shetland Isles. New episodes are due to air on BBC One and iPlayer later this year. Season 10 concluded four months before the announcement of season 11. Shetland is based on the award-winning novels by Ann Cleeves.
