Sexual assault convictions and Russian war leak emerge in Sweden

Crime & justiceCrime
Key Points
  • Multiple sexual assault convictions involve minors across Sweden, including cases in Höglandet, Jönköping, Gothenburg, and Växjö.
  • A leaked Russian report claims over 1.3 million casualties in the war against Ukraine, with Ukrainian intelligence and President Zelenskyy commenting.
  • Other cases include convictions for sexual harassment, assault on a child, and arrests for rape and drunk driving, alongside transport and media disruptions.

In Höglandet, a girl has been sentenced to seven months of youth supervision for the rape of a child on two occasions. She is also ordered to pay damages to the 12-year-old boy who was subjected to the rapes, with the amount set at 290,000 SEK. Both the girl and the boy have said that at the times they had some kind of relationship and that he let her into his room. Separately, a 15-year-old girl in a municipality in Jönköping County has been convicted of raping a younger boy, with the district court stating that on two occasions she allegedly forced him to have oral sex. In the verdict, the district court has taken into account the girl's young age and that she is assessed to have a special need for care. During questioning, the girl claimed that there was never any coercion, but the court's allegation of forced acts remains. It was the girl who told about the events, and both Eksjö District Court and the prosecutor state that without her involvement, the crimes would not have been investigated. This is one of the reasons the sentence is lower than it would have been otherwise; for a person over 18, the minimum sentence is three years in prison.

A secret Russian report has been leaked, revealing that Russia is said to have lost over 1,315,000 soldiers in the war against Ukraine, according to the leaked document. Sixty-two percent are reported to have been killed and thirty-eight percent injured. The information comes according to the Ukrainian intelligence service GUR, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the documents on Telegram. Zelenskyy believes that Russia's strategy now is to try to remove sanctions against energy.

In Gothenburg, a 15-year-old boy suspected of a number of rapes and sexual assaults on women was interviewed by police on Saturday. Police called a press conference after the arrest to tell about it and calm frightened women in the West coast city. Police say they have strong evidence connecting the boy to two rapes, two attempted rapes, and two cases of sexual assault. At the police press conference, detectives said they believed their suspect to be behind many more attacks. The first attack took place in August and the last around a week ago. The suspect often chose his victims by randomly knocking on apartment doors. Prosecutors have until 12 o'clock on Monday to charge the boy or release him.

The assault was discovered when police investigated a serious assault last summer where the 15-year-old was a suspect. In his phone, an eight-second video clip was found where the person filming assaulted a sleeping girl. She was identified as a relative of the 15-year-old. The face of the person committing the assault is not visible. The teenager has denied that it is him. The 15-year-old is also convicted of gross sexual assault against a child and is sentenced to 110 hours of youth service.

In Växjö municipality, a 16-year-old has been convicted of child rape after an incident in a school toilet. The exposed girl told the court that she both tried to push the 16-year-old away and clearly said no before the assault. The 16-year-old has consistently denied the crime and claimed it was voluntary sex. The court establishes that it is proven that the 16-year-old – who knew the girl beforehand – was aware that the girl was under 15 years old. The 16-year-old, previously without a criminal record, is convicted of child rape and is sentenced to nine months of youth supervision.

I both tried to push the 16-year-old away and clearly said no before the assault.

Girl, Victim

A 35-year-old man from the county is convicted of sexual harassment and must pay nearly 95,000 SEK total in day fines and damages. He is convicted for five cases of sexual harassment against four different women. One of the women met the 35-year-old man at a party and they agreed to start a business collaboration. While on vacation, the woman received several messages from the 35-year-old man that were not related to the collaboration but of a sexual nature, including images of his genitals. The 35-year-old man has admitted to the acts and cited poor mental health.

Halmstad District Court convicts a man in his 40s of sexual harassment, giving him a conditional sentence and ordering him to pay damages totaling 40,000 SEK to two women. During a business trip in 2024, the man exposed himself to one of the women in a hotel room, allegedly having an erection and saying 'here you see what you get'. After the trip, the man allegedly started sending nude pictures of himself to the woman via Snapchat. During car rides in service, the man allegedly groped her breasts, thighs, and buttocks. The man allegedly harassed her through derogatory comments and questioned her suitability for soldier training due to her height. The man allegedly 'slapped' another female colleague on the buttocks, which the court considers minor assault. The man has admitted to the crimes, although his memories of certain events differ from what the plaintiffs have stated.

The Swedish Armed Forces' personnel responsibility board has closed the case because the man resigned from his employment after an agreement. In 2017, the board decided the man should have a salary deduction because he made sexual advances towards recruits.

In Skellefteå, a man is convicted of both rape and sexual harassment of a child after an incident in March last year when the girl was 14 years old. The man and the girl knew each other previously after he contacted her in central Skellefteå. At that time, the man asked the girl to go for a walk to the river and there he began touching her thighs and tried to kiss her. The girl showed she did not want to, and then the man left. They went down to the river again and there the man raped the girl under the Victoria Bridge. The girl has in interrogations said she felt panic and froze when she saw the man in the center and therefore did not dare to oppose him. She showed with body language several times during the rape that she did not want to. The man has denied the crime, but Skellefteå District Court believes he did not ensure the girl voluntarily participated in the sexual acts and gave contradictory statements in interrogations.

A 75-year-old woman is convicted of assault after hitting a 9-year-old girl selling mayflowers on northern Öland. The incident occurred in Löttorp during spring 2024. The girl was selling mayflowers at the local grocery store with two friends of the same age. The convicted woman was asked to buy and then allegedly started shouting at the children and also hit one of them on the back when they ran away. The woman herself denies the crime and claims she pushed the children out after they called her various things. The district court writes in its verdict that the girl's description of the event is detailed and credible and therefore considers the woman's version disproven. The sentence is a conditional sentence and the woman must also pay 10,000 SEK in compensation for violation to the girl.

There was never any coercion.

Girl, Accused

In Stockholm, a man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at a hotel during the night to Wednesday. The woman herself alerted the police and stated that the man was still at the hotel. The hotel room where the rape is alleged to have occurred has been cordoned off for a technical investigation.

In Sandviken, a man in his 50s is suspected of aggravated drunk driving after riding an e-scooter. The man was stopped just after 1 a.m. by the police and had to accompany them for testing. The man's level of intoxication was so high that he is now suspected of aggravated drunk driving. The police write on their website that some electric scooters are so powerful that they are counted as a moped class II. Thereby, one risks being suspected of drunk driving if driving these vehicles in an intoxicated state.
