Key Points
  • Seal discovered in unusual locations in Öregrund with unclear circumstances
  • Rescue attempt involved luring with fish and gentle encouragement toward water
  • Experts note seal is young pup likely abandoned by mother, advise leaving seals alone

Last week, people in Öregrund discovered a seal lying on a parking lot, according to officials. How the seal got to the parking lot is unclear. A few days later, Peter Törnqvist spotted a seal lying far up on the beach below Societetshuset, officials said.

The seal had wounds on its head. It is unclear whether the seal on the parking lot and the seal on the beach are the same animal. Peter Törnqvist and his girlfriend first tried to lure the seal with fish after buying herring at a nearby shop, officials reported.

When dusk began to fall, they instead tried to gently get the seal to move toward the water, officials said. The seal eventually made its way back into the sea. According to the County Administrative Board, it is not unusual for seal pups to come ashore at this time of year because mothers abandon them around this period.

The seal is young and likely born in early March. The seal looked a bit neglected in the video clip. The best tip for private individuals in a similar situation is to leave seal pups alone.

In this case, moving the seal pup from a parking lot to the sea sounds like a reasonable solution. As a rule, one should not touch seals in nature.
