Scottish Parliament to Debate Greyhound Racing Ban Bill

PoliticsPolitics
Key Points
  • A bill to ban greyhound racing in Scotland will be debated in parliament on 12 March.
  • Supporters argue it protects animal welfare, while opponents say it wastes time on a non-existent activity.
  • The Scottish Government endorsed the bill in September, but its details and enactment timeline are unknown.

Scottish Green MSP Mark Ruskell's Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill is expected to be debated on Thursday, 12 March. The bill, which aims to ban greyhound racing in Scotland, was endorsed by the Scottish Government in September. " He also noted, "Times need to change and leaving animal cruelty in the past is an imperative," and urged, "Greyhound racing with all of its associated misery has no place in 21st century Britain.

" This creates a contradiction over whether greyhound racing occurs in Scotland, with the bill implying it exists or could exist, while the industry claims it does not. The specific offences defined in the bill have not been detailed, and the timeline for its potential enactment if passed remains unclear. The debate comes as animal welfare advocates push for broader changes in the UK.

A ban on the practice would be a tremendous result for animal welfare, for dogs and for Scotland.

The people of Scotland will be totally bemused that the SNP government and Green Party are looking to waste parliamentary time in the run up to the election banning something that doesn't take place here when there are so many issues that deserve and require legislation.
