Roz Foyer has written to the UK Government claiming staffing issues and delays to the postal service are a threat to the poll. Scots will vote in the seventh Scottish Parliament election in May, with many voting by post at an earlier point during the campaign. The Royal Mail will have a key role in delivering election materials to homes across the country.
The postal workers' union, the CWU, has a number of concerns with the operation of the Royal Mail and the service being provided. According to the CWU, a two-tier workforce model, introduced in late 2022, has created significant friction and disharmony among postal workers. The CWU alleges that 21% of new starters in Scotland leave within 90 days and that morale among postal workers is at an all-time low.
The union also claims a new delivery model will lead to problems like mail being delayed. Roz Foyer claimed Royal Mail is in a perilous state. ' Foyer added, 'Mail delivery and the guarantee of a universal postal service is a critical function of our nation's infrastructure.
' He added, 'Their unworkable Optimised Delivery Model simply does not work. ' It is not known what specific actions the UK Government has taken in response to Roz Foyer's letter. Royal Mail's official response to the allegations made by the STUC and CWU has not been disclosed.
The election is scheduled for May.
