Key Points
  • A former Army Colonel alleges Prestwick Airport is supporting US military operations in Iran.
  • First Minister John Swinney is considering banning US flights and seeks clarification on airport use.
  • Swinney warns the conflict could spike prices and calls for de-escalation amid rising casualties.

Philip Ingram, a former Army Colonel and Intelligence Officer, says Scotland's government-owned Prestwick Airport will 'almost certainly' be supporting American military operations in Iran. ' Flight records indicate that 24 flights landed in the week preceding Trump's bombing of Iran, with at least one originating from Israel. US military flights have touched down at Prestwick Airport 550 times within a 10-month span.

First Minister John Swinney indicated he would contemplate prohibiting US air force flights from landing at Prestwick Airport. ' Swinney called for an immediate cessation of the conflict, cautioning that it could cause energy and food prices to skyrocket. ' The US and Israel have issued threats to escalate their strikes in the Middle East.

These are deeply concerning times, and I know people in Scotland will be worried sick for friends and family in the Gulf, and worried sick about the threat of rising food and energy costs if this war continues.

John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland

Actions by the US and Israel are believed to have already resulted in over 1,500 fatalities and could potentially trigger a worldwide economic downturn.

Whilst war is always a tragedy, sometimes it is a necessity. But that is not the case here. There is nothing I have seen over this past week that makes me think this action by the United States and Israel was in any way a response to an imminent threat.
