A citizen initiative from Johan Ek in Sandviken, Sweden, has led to a proposal for the municipality to raise the rainbow flag twice a year. The initiative, submitted by Ek, who is politically active in the Left Party but acted as a citizen, calls for the flag to be flown on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia on May 17 and on International Pride Day on June 28. The proposal will be voted on by the Sandviken municipal council.
Ek says that in his Sandviken, everyone's equal value is a strong pillar and everyone is welcome. He hopes the decision will have a ripple effect and inspire other municipalities. In connection with this work, Sandviken municipality has developed a policy for when the municipality should flag, beyond general flag days.
