Johan Ek, a politically active member of the Left Party, submitted the citizen initiative to Sandviken Municipality about raising the rainbow flag during Pride. According to SVT Gävleborg, Johan Ek described his vision for an inclusive community, emphasizing equality and welcome. The initiative has gained support and is now up for a vote in the Sandviken municipal council.
The proposal is to raise the rainbow flag two days per year: on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (May 17) and on International Pride Day (June 28). In connection with the work on Johan Ek's proposal, Sandviken Municipality has developed a policy for when the municipality should flag, in addition to general flag days. The proposed policy includes flagging on specific days with designated flags, such as the rainbow flag on May 17 and June 28.
In my Sandviken, everyone's equal value is a strong pillar. In my Sandviken, everyone is welcome.
According to SVT Gävleborg, Johan Ek described the potential impact as significant, expressing hope that other municipalities might follow suit if Sandviken approves. Whether the Sandviken municipal council will approve the proposal is uncertain. How many other municipalities might adopt similar policies if Sandviken approves the initiative is also unknown.
It would be very big for me, I hope that other municipalities will want to follow suit.
