Key Points
  • Saab is expanding its operations in Åre and Östersund due to increased demand from Swedish defense forces.
  • The company started with a pilot project in Åre in 2018 and expanded from 3 to 10 positions in March 2022.
  • Saab's CEO is in Canada seeking a potential fighter jet contract as Canada reviews its F-35 purchase plans.

Swedish defense contractor Saab AB is expanding its presence in the Jämtland region, with plans for larger facilities and additional employees in both Åre and Östersund, according to regional newspaper Östersunds-Posten. The expansion is reportedly driven by increased demand for the company's products from the Swedish defense forces.

Saab's office in Åre has become overcrowded, prompting the company to search for larger premises. The defense firm first established a pilot project in Åre in 2018, and in March 2022, the operation expanded from three to ten positions.

Separately, Saab CEO Micael Johansson has traveled to Canada in hopes of securing a major contract for the Jas 39 Gripen fighter jet, according to Östgöta Correspondenten. The Canadian government is reportedly reviewing its planned purchase of 88 American F-35 aircraft, which would cost approximately 190 billion kronor, potentially opening the door for European alternatives like Saab's Gripen.

The developments come as Sweden continues to strengthen its defense capabilities and defense industry partnerships in response to regional security concerns.
